episode 1- if i were a carpenter
Episode 1 consists of 6 scenes filmed on the backlot at Elstree Studios. The
first sees Dennis, Oz and Neville finding their way across the BECO
Building Site before bumping into west country gentle giant; Brian ‘Bomber’
Busbridge.
episode 2 - who won the war anyway?
14 Scenes were filmed throughout Elstree Studio backlot in Episode 2.
Popular scenes fans will no doubt remember include Oz singing along to a
German version of Sheena Easton’s ‘My Baby Takes the Morning Train’,
and the moment where Neville finds a bomb on site saving the day.
episode 3 - the girls they left behind
Herr Pfister is late with their pay, we’re introduced to an aggressive
Magowan for the first time and the lads devise a tall story to explain Oz’s
mysterious disappearance in Episode 3 where 6 scenes were filmed on the
backlot of Elstree Studios.
episode 4 - suspicion
The lads are laid off, Brenda cancels the bathroom tiles and suspicion is rife
in episode 4 as Oz takes it upon himself to ‘catch the thief’. Again, the
backlot at Elstree Studios is used extensively focusing on set buildings #1,
#2 and #4 where a total of 10 scenes were filmed.
episode 5 - HOME THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD
More footage was shot throughout Elstree Studios backlot in episode 5 than
any other throughout series 1. A quick glance at the interactive site plan
shows the film set littered with scenes amounting to 33% of footage in this
episode alone. Find out where Barry and Moxey built their Herb Garden and
where Wayne first set eyes on Bombers daughter Tracy.
episode 6 - the accused
A German scaffolder falls narrowly missing Oz before Dennis and Bomber
plead with the Erics for assistance with Neville’s bail. Later, a telephone
conversation between Oz and Brenda leaves her somewhat distressed in

episode 7 - private lives
Only one minute and fifty-nine seconds of footage shot on the backlot of
Elstree Studios made the final cut of episode 7 which went on to become
fans favourite ever episode 30 years later following our poll featured in the
Evening Chronicle in 2013. Nevertheless, two unforgettable scenes
featured in ‘Private Lives’ saw Wayne chat up Dagmar during Barry’s first
lesson ‘on the pull’ whilst an infuriated Dennis chases Oz off site following
the realisation he ruined his romantic weekend.
episode 8 - the fugitive
The backlot at Elstree Studios was used extensively throughout episode 8
where we see Oz persue German vandals before falling foul of a tin of red
paint. Later, Colin - a fugitive from the army - is chased across the site
before being captured by the lads in the drainage run. View a total of 12
scenes meandering their way through and around the film set.
episode 9 - the alien
A total of 11 scenes filmed on Elstree Studios backlot mainly featured
around the ‘Admin Hut’ and ‘Site Entrance’. This episode sees an
aggressive Magowan return to upset the ‘harmony of the hut’ before Herr
Grunwald finally gives him his cards following a persuasive word from
Dennis.
episode 10 - last rights
Barry and Moxey enjoy a spot of ‘tanning’ before Bomber injures his foot
resulting in an unexpected visit to hospital in episode 10, ‘Last Rights’.
Later, Moxey, Barry and Oz discuss a new business venture before
bundling Hedley Irwin’s coffin on the back of Oz’s pick-up truck all of which
were shot here at Elstree Studios.
episode 11 - the lovers
Neville, Barry and Wayne create a diversion whilst Moxey ‘redistributes’
stock from the on-site paint store in a bid to brighten up their quarters. Later
Oz focuses his attention on new love interest ‘Uli’ resulting in a chase
across site at knife point by a very jealous Turkish boyfriend Kamal in
Episode 11, The Lovers.
episode 12 - love & other four letter words
Episode 12 sees extensive use of the film set at Elstree Studios where 11
scenes were filmed. Find out where Bomber and Dennis spot the biggest
rat they’d ever seen and watch Wayne loiter around the admin hut hoping
for a glimpse of his beloved Christa.
episode 13 - when the boat goes out
The backlot at Elstree Studios is further exploited throughout the 13th and
final explosive episode where we see Wayne carve the finest piece of
skirting board into a highly original love token. Later, Dennis, Neville,
Wayne, Bomber, Barry and Moxey are joined by Oz prior to celebrate
‘topping-out’ before ‘Hut B’ burns to the ground following a carelessly
discarded cigarette after a final night at the club.
